Sometimes it's good to think "Inside" The Box
Wait...Aren't we supposed to think outside the box? Normally yes, and many Floridians can tell you how irritating this particular box can really be. While people residing further north may not be too familiar with what we're talking about here, they should be aware of it nonetheless. So what exactly is this "Box" that we're speaking of?
South east of the US are the Atlantic/Caribbean bodies of water. This area is sometimes referred to as our infamous "Box"! If there is a named storm in this area, your homeowners insurance policy is frozen, meaning no changes can be made, no policies can be bought, and no policies can be sold. This could mean real trouble for some of our last-minute 'panickers' out there. Not to mention since you can't purchase a home without being able to purchase homeowners insurance, when this pesky box has a visitor it has a tendency to put a bump in the road of some real estate sales!
But for all you that love to leave things to the last minute, fear not!! The FIGTEAM has some useful tips to help you beat this "Box":
  • Preparation! An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! If it's at all possible it's best to make sure that your homeowners insurance policies are up to date in the springtime BEFORE the hurricanes come. That way you'll have less worries when we get into hurricane season.
  • Always have plenty of batteries and flashlights that WORK! That means test them once or twice a year, okay?
  • Have plenty of first aid supplies stocked in your home. You can never have enough band-aids!
  • Have lots of bottled water stocked, one gallon per person per day for at least three days for drinking and sanitation.
  • Make sure your car is gassed up before the storm hits. In case power gets knocked out you're going to need SOMETHING that has air conditioning!
  • BEFORE the storm comes is the best time to set up your hurricane doors and shutters.
Always check with our good friends at the weatherchannel.com to keep updated on whether or not you need to worry about "The Box"!
Just remember to prepare before hand for the hurricanes with some "in-the-box" thinking this season. Believe me it works! Not to mention your insurance companies will be happier if you get your policies straight, but who likes to make those guys happy anyway? We do, click here.
